Frequently Asked Questions

What is the maximum output power of CR6210?

CR6210 can drive LED loads up to approximately 15W depending on the LED forward voltage. With 300mA output current: (1) For 3V LEDs (single chip): up to 0.9W (3V × 0.3A). (2) For 9V LED strings (3 chips): up to 2.7W. (3) For 36V LED strings (12 chips): up to 10.8W. (4) For 50V LED strings: up to 15W. The actual maximum depends on input voltage, LED configuration, and thermal design. CR Micro provides reference designs for various LED configurations and power levels.

How does the dimming function work in CR6210?

CR6210 supports both analog and PWM dimming methods: (1) Analog dimming - adjust the DIM pin voltage (0.5V to 2.5V) to linearly control LED current from 20% to 100%. (2) PWM dimming - apply PWM signal to DIM pin (100Hz to 1kHz) for brightness control with high contrast ratio. (3) Dimming range - analog dimming provides 5:1 range, PWM dimming provides 100:1 or better. The dimming function is smooth and flicker-free. For TRIAC dimming compatibility, external circuitry is required to convert phase-cut to analog/PWM signal.

What is the power factor of CR6210 and how is it achieved?

CR6210 achieves high power factor (>0.9) and low THD (<20%) through valley-fill or critical conduction mode (CRM) operation. The high power factor is achieved by: (1) Making the input current follow the input voltage waveform. (2) Operating at the boundary between continuous and discontinuous conduction mode. (3) Built-in power factor correction circuitry. This high power factor meets regulatory requirements (e.g., Energy Star, IEC 61000-3-2) for lighting applications above 5W. The power factor remains high across the input voltage range (85-265VAC).

What protection features does CR6210 include for LED applications?

CR6210 includes comprehensive protection features for reliable LED operation: (1) LED open protection - shuts down when LED string is open, auto-recovery when reconnected. (2) LED short protection - limits current during LED short fault. (3) Over-temperature protection - reduces current or shuts down at excessive temperature. (4) Cycle-by-cycle current limiting - prevents inductor saturation. (5) VCC under-voltage lockout - ensures proper startup. These protections ensure safe operation and long LED lifetime under various fault conditions.

Can CR6210 be used for TRIAC dimmable LED applications?

CR6210 can be used in TRIAC dimmable applications with additional circuitry to interface with phase-cut dimmers. The typical implementation includes: (1) TRIAC dimmer compatibility circuit - maintains holding current for reliable TRIAC operation. (2) Phase-cut detection - converts dimmer phase angle to analog or PWM signal. (3) Dimming interface - connects to CR6210's DIM pin. CR Micro provides reference designs for TRIAC dimmable LED drivers using CR6210. The solution achieves smooth dimming from 100% to 1% without flicker across different TRIAC dimmer brands.

What external components are required for CR6210 LED driver?

CR6210 requires the following external components for a complete buck LED driver: (1) Input rectifier and filter - bridge rectifier and bulk capacitor for AC input. (2) Inductor - buck inductor sized for 300mA ripple current. (3) Freewheeling diode - fast recovery diode for inductor current path. (4) Current sense resistor - sets the LED current. (5) VCC capacitor - bypass capacitor for IC supply. (6) Dimming components - resistors or PWM source for dimming control. The built-in 500V MOSFET eliminates the need for an external power switch. CR Micro provides complete BOM and inductor specifications.
