Frequently Asked Questions
What is the peak pulse current rating of SMBJ5.0A?
SMBJ5.0A has a peak pulse current (IPP) rating of 65A at 10/1000μs waveform, which corresponds to the 600W peak pulse power rating. The SMB package provides excellent thermal performance for surface-mount applications. At shorter pulse widths (e.g., 8/20μs surge waveforms), the peak power capability increases to approximately 1500W. The actual clamping performance depends on the surge source impedance and the protected circuit characteristics. CR Micro provides detailed surge capability curves in the datasheet.

How does SMBJ5.0A compare to P6KE6.8A for 5V protection?
SMBJ5.0A and P6KE6.8A both protect 5V circuits but have different characteristics: (1) SMBJ5.0A: Surface-mount SMB package, 5.0V VWM, 9.2V clamping voltage, compact for automated assembly. (2) P6KE6.8A: Through-hole DO-15 package, 5.8V VWM, 10.5V clamping voltage, higher surge capability. SMBJ5.0A offers lower clamping voltage (9.2V vs 10.5V) providing better protection for sensitive 5V ICs. P6KE6.8A has higher energy handling due to larger package. For compact designs, SMBJ5.0A is preferred; for maximum surge protection, P6KE6.8A is better.

What is the junction capacitance of SMBJ5.0A?
SMBJ5.0A has a typical junction capacitance of 1500pF at 0V reverse bias and 1MHz. The capacitance decreases with increasing reverse voltage - at 5V reverse bias, it drops to approximately 800pF. For high-speed data lines, this capacitance may cause signal integrity issues. For such applications, CR Micro offers low-capacitance TVS arrays or ESD protection devices with capacitance <1pF. For power line protection, the capacitance is typically not a concern and can even help with EMI filtering.
Contact our FAE team for capacitance analysis and high-speed signal protection recommendations.
Can SMBJ5.0A be used for USB port protection?
SMBJ5.0A can be used for USB VBUS (5V power line) protection, but its 1500pF capacitance is too high for USB data lines (D+ and D-). For complete USB port protection: (1) Use SMBJ5.0A or similar on VBUS for power line surge protection. (2) Use low-capacitance ESD protection devices (<1pF) on D+ and D- data lines. CR Micro offers USB-specific protection solutions including integrated multi-channel TVS arrays that protect both power and data lines with appropriate capacitance levels for USB 2.0 and USB 3.0 speeds.

What is the thermal resistance of SMBJ5.0A in SMB package?
SMBJ5.0A in SMB package has the following thermal characteristics: (1) Junction-to-lead thermal resistance RthJL = 15°C/W. (2) Junction-to-ambient thermal resistance RthJA = 120°C/W (on standard PCB with recommended pad layout). (3) Maximum junction temperature Tj(max) = 150°C. For high-reliability applications, maintain junction temperature below 125°C. The SMB package requires proper PCB layout with adequate copper area for heat dissipation. CR Micro provides recommended PCB land patterns and thermal design guidelines.

Is SMBJ5.0A suitable for lead-free soldering processes?
Yes, SMBJ5.0A is fully compatible with lead-free (Pb-free) soldering processes. The device is RoHS compliant and meets JEDEC J-STD-020 moisture sensitivity level 1 (unlimited floor life). The SMB package terminals are plated with pure tin or tin-bismuth alloy, compatible with standard SAC305 (Sn96.5Ag3.0Cu0.5) lead-free solder. Recommended soldering profile: Peak temperature 245-260°C, Time above 217°C: 60-90 seconds. The device can withstand multiple reflow cycles for double-sided assembly. Halogen-free versions are also available upon request.
