TVS diodes and ESD protection devices serve different protection needs: (1) TVS diodes handle high-energy transients with power ratings from 200W to 30kW, protecting against lightning surges (IEC 61000-4-5), inductive switching, and load dump. They have higher capacitance (tens to hundreds of pF) and are used on power lines and lower-speed signals. How do I select the right working voltage for TVS diodes?

TVS diode working voltage (VWM) selection follows these guidelines: (1) VWM must be higher than the maximum normal operating voltage of the protected circuit, typically with 10-20% margin. (2) For 5V circuits, select VWM = 5V or 6V TVS. (3) For 12V automotive systems, select VWM = 13V or 15V TVS. (4) For 24V industrial systems, select VWM = 26V or 28V TVS. (5) For 48V systems, select VWM = 48V or 58V TVS. The breakdown voltage (VBR) should be below the maximum voltage the protected circuit can withstand.
