Diode selection depends on several key parameters: Voltage Rating (VRRM) - Must exceed peak reverse voltage with 50% margin. For 380VAC rectification (peak 537V), use 800V or 1200V diodes

Current Rating (IF(AV)) - Select based on average DC current with 30-50% derating. For 100A DC output, use 150A rated diodes

What is the difference between standard recovery and fast recovery diodes?

Standard and fast recovery diodes serve different applications: Standard Recovery Diodes (SKN series) - Reverse recovery time trr > 500ns, optimized for 50/60Hz line-frequency rectification, lower cost, lower forward voltage drop (VF ≈ 1.0-1.2V), used in AC-DC power supplies, battery chargers, motor drive front-ends, welding equipment. Fast Recovery Diodes (SKL series) - Reverse recovery time trr < 100ns, designed for high-frequency switching applications, higher cost, higher VF (1.2-1.5V), essential for SMPS, DC-DC converters, inverter freewheeling, power factor correction circuits. Selection Criteria - Use standard recovery for line-frequency rectification where cost matters. Use fast recovery for switching applications >1kHz where reverse recovery losses cause excessive heating. Mixing types incorrectly can cause 20-30% efficiency loss or device failure.

How do I calculate power losses in rectifier diodes?

Total diode power loss consists of conduction loss and switching loss: Conduction Loss = VF × IF(AV) for standard recovery diodes at line frequency. For VF = 1.1V and IF(AV) = 100A: Pcond = 110W per diode

Switching Loss (Fast Recovery) = 0.5 × VRRM × IRRM × trr × fsw. For VRRM=1200V, IRRM=50A, trr=50ns, fsw=20kHz: Psw = 30W per diode

What is the difference between SKN stud-mounted and SKKD module diodes?

SKN and SKKD packages serve different mounting and current requirements: SKN Stud-Mounted Diodes - Threaded stud (M6-M24) for direct heatsink mounting, current ratings 10A-3000A, single diode in DO-5/DO-8/DO-9 packages, ideal for high-current single-phase rectifiers, electroplating equipment, battery chargers, easy field replacement with standard tools. SKKD Module Rectifiers - Three-phase bridge in compact module package, current ratings 10A-500A, integrated 6-diode full-wave bridge, ideal for three-phase motor drive front-ends, compact power supplies, simplified PCB mounting with screw terminals. Selection Criteria - Use SKN for very high currents (>500A) or single-phase applications. Use SKKD for three-phase applications <500A where compact size and easy mounting matter. SKN offers better thermal performance for extreme currents, SKKD offers lower assembly cost for standard industrial drives.
